『奉還町ラプソディ』
山口県から岡山県に引っ越してきた「ぼく」は、近所の奉還町商店街のまんじゅう屋さんのあつしと仲よくなる。奉還町商店街は、江戸の終わりの大政奉還に際して配られた奉還金をもとに武士が始めた歴史ある通りだが、テレビの取材があってもまとまらず、いまひとつ盛り上がらない。そんな商店街でのさまざまなできごとを、「ぼく」の視点から描く６話を収めた連作短編集。
毎日マネキンを並べた店の前に仁王立ちしている洋装店べにやの怖いおっちゃんが、じつは時々マネキンたちといっしょに空を飛ぶ空想にふけっていたり、いろいろな動物たちの毛や皮で作られた道具を使っている理髪店のいのうえさんが、動物たちの命を悼みつつ野犬とたたかったり……。満州での子ども時代の花畑に思いをはせて地面に転がるみつさんや、夫の思い出の明太子を博多まで買いにいくナミばあなど、一筋縄ではいかない人びとの行動にふりまわされつつも、「ぼく」やあつしは、それぞれの人生の重さを感じていく。その一方で、カフェや古着屋などを始める若者や外国人、ブライダルアドバイザーとして奉還町商店街での結婚式を企画するあつしの兄など、新しい世代も楽しく描かれている。
実在する商店街を舞台に、古さと新しさ、日常と非日常、過去と未来が交錯する不思議な味わいがある。（奥山）

Hokan Town Rapsody
The narrator, an elementary school student who moved from Yamaguchi to Okayama, makes friends with Atsushi, whose family runs a manju shop in Hokan Town shopping district. The district was founded in the late 19th century by disbanded samurai who used their severance pay to start shops. Despite its interesting history and TV coverage, however, it has fallen into decline. The book is a collection of six short stories about various happenings in Hokan Town seen through the eyes of the narrator.
The owner of Beniya clothing store, an intimidating old man who always stands outside the mannequin-filled window, actually dreams of flying away with those mannequins. Mr. Inoue, an elderly barber, mourns the deaths of the animals from which the hair and hides for his tools are made, yet he still fights with stray dogs. Mitsu, an elderly woman, lies on the ground and recalls the Manchurian flower meadows of her childhood. And Granny Nami goes to Hakata to buy spicy cod roe because it reminds her of her late husband. While sometimes bewildered by the unusual actions of the people they meet, the narrator and Atsushi recognize the significance of each person’s life. Newcomers are also portrayed with a light touch, such as young people and foreigners who have started cafes and secondhand clothing stores, and Atsushi’s older brother, who plans weddings. Set in a real shopping district, each episode has a unique flavor derived from the intersection of old and new, ordinary and extraordinary, past and present. (Okuyama)
