『夏に、ネコをさがして』
佳斗（けいと）は小学６年の７月の終わりに、亡くなった祖母のナツばあが住んでいた家に両親と引っ越す。おばあちゃん子だった佳斗は、祖母の突然の死を受け入れることができない。一家は、祖母がかわいがっていた外ネコのテンちゃんを家に迎え入れようと考えるが、その矢先、テンちゃんが姿を消してしまう。テンちゃんを探してあるくうちに、佳斗は同じ６年生で長髪の蘭と出会う。蘭はこのあたりのネコの縄張りに詳しく、佳斗の話を聞いて、手伝ってくれるという。この町は老人と空き家だらけだ。ふたりではり紙を作り、出会ったお年寄りに声をかけると、何人もが祖母の知り合いだった。町を歩くと、祖母と行った場所、いっしょにしたことをあれこれ思い出した。佳斗は「この町にはナツばあとの思い出が、あちこちにある」と、少しずつ自分の気持ちを整理していく。人は死んでも、誰かの心の中で生き続けているのだ。タイ人の母を持ち、認知症の祖母の世話をしている蘭も、溺愛していたネコの死を引きずっていたが、佳斗とのネコ探しをきっかけに、野良ネコを引き取ろうと決心した。交通事故にあって入院していたテンちゃんを見つけることもできた。
新しい友情の誕生、子どもと老人の交流があたたかく描かれる。老人問題、多文化共生、ネコ狩り、戦時中の動物供出など、さまざまなテーマをさりげなく盛り込んだ作品。（汐﨑）

In Summer, Looking for a Cat
At the end of July when Keito is in sixth grade, his family moves into Grandma Natsu’s house. Grandma Natsu had died suddenly, and Keito, who was very close to her, can’t accept her death. The family plans to adopt her cat Ten, but it disappears. As Keito searches for the cat, he meets Ran, a sixth grader with long hair. He knows the neighborhood cats well and offers to help look. The town is full of elderly people and empty houses, and the two children make flyers and talk to everyone they meet. Keito finds many of them knew Grandma Natsu. As he walks, he recalls places he went and things he did with his grandmother, gradually processing his feelings about her death. He realizes that memories of her are found everywhere in the town and that, even when someone dies, they live on in the hearts of others. Ran, whose mother is Thai, takes care of his grandmother with dementia and has been dealing with own grief over his pet cat’s death. While searching with Keito, he decides to adopt a stray cat. The two children find Ten in an animal hospital being treated after an accident.
The book warmly depicts the blossoming of a new friendship and the interactions between children and the elderly and explores a variety of themes, including the challenges faced by senior citizens, multiculturalism, cat hunting, and the “donation” of pets and livestock for leather and food during World War II when supplies ran low.
