『５年３組びっくりだ 短編小学校３』
５年生のあるクラスの子どもたちの様子を、章ごとに主人公を変えて15 章にまとめた「短編小学校」シリーズの３作目。工業地帯のど真ん中にある水明市（すいめいし）の小学校の15 人の児童が、「びっくりだ」と感じた経験が語られている。
「スカウト」は、成哉（せいや）が河原で自分の体を使ってさまざまな音を創り出して夢中になっていると、高校生のヒューマンビートボックスの音楽グループからスカウトされる話で、「キャッチフレーズ」では、水明市の観光のためのキャッチフレーズを考えた瑞月（みづき）が、入賞した同級生のミアの作品に驚く。「歌姫」では、レオがフィリピン人のジャスミンのレストランで夕食を食べていると、テレビにフィリピン人の歌手が出てきて、ジャスミンに会いたいと言う。また、「招待券」は、放課後、マリンポートタワーへ遊びに行った順規（じゅんき）と幸平が、過去に撤去された水族館にいたペンギンやジンベエザメなどに出会う。
他にも遠足や校外学習、長縄大会、他校との交流とほのかな恋愛、人間っぽい家事ロボットが家に来た話、級友の祖父や祖母と知り合う話、川に迷い込んだエイと会話をする話などが収められている。
それぞれの章は短くて読みやすく、「びっくり」の対象や内容も、子どもたちの文化的背景や家族構成も多様で、主人公ひとりひとりの悩みや発見がユーモラスに描かれている。（土居）

The third volume in the Elementary School Short Story Series, this book consists of fifteen chapters, each with a different protagonist, that depicts children in a grade five classroom. The school is located in the middle of an industrial district in Suimei City, and each episode shares an experience that surprised the fifteen children in the class.
In “Scout,” Seiya has fun at the river making sounds with his body as an instrument. There he’s discovered by a high school human beatbox group. In “Catch Phrase,” Mizuki, who has come up with a slogan for the city’s tourism campaign, is surprised by the winning slogan of her classmate Mia. In “Singer,” Leo is at Jasmine’s Filipino restaurant when he hears a Filipino singer on TV say she wants to meet Jasmine. In “Invitation,” Junki and Kohei go to Marine Port Tower after school and run into penguins, a whale shark, and other creatures from an aquarium that was once located on the site.
Other stories depict school excursions and field trips, a long jump rope contest, interactions with students from other schools and falling in love, a humanoid housekeeping robot that comes to a student’s house, getting to know a classmate’s grandparents, and a conversation with a stingray that wanders into the river.
Each chapter is short and easy to read. What surprises each student, as well as the students’ cultural backgrounds and family compositions, are diverse, and the concerns and discoveries of each protagonist are presented with gentle humor. (Doi)
