『エツコさん』
元小学校の先生で、70 代のおばあさんエツコさんは認知症。そんなエツコさんが、孫や孫の級友などの子どもたちと関わる様子を描いた連作集。
「迷子」は、引っ越したばかりの樹（たつき）が迷子になってエツコさんに出会う。エツコさんは、道案内をしてくれると言い、途中から先生の時の記憶に戻って家庭訪問をしているつもりになる。一方、樹は知らないうちに、前の学校のあたりを歩いていて、友だちと気まずい別れ方をしたことを思い出す。「雨やどり」は、エツコさんがボランティアをしていた時になついていた日菜（ひな）が、エツコさんを自宅に連れてきて、宿題をみてもらう。帰宅した姉の明里（あかり）は驚くが、エツコさんが自分の名前を呼んでくれたのでうれしくなる。「お守り」は、エツコさんのお守りを拾った航平が、エツコさんの家へ行き、エツコさんの夫の幽霊を見る。「きいろいやま」は、ユウトが２年前に公園で出会ったオオノさんという男性との交流の記憶を、エツコさんのおかげで取り戻す。「エツコさん」は、過去と現在を行き来するエツコさんが家族との誕生日会を過ごす様子が描かれ、「記憶」は、エツコさんと孫の真名（まな）が公園へ散歩に行って、真名が記憶について考える。すべての作品が「記憶」というキーワードでつながっていて、子どもたちがエツコさんと出会うことによって、自分の抱えている問題に向き合ったり、心がほっこりしたりする点が興味深い。エツコさんの生きざまも読み取れる。（土居）

Etsuko
A collection of short stories about Etsuko, former elementary school teacher in her seventies who has dementia, and her interactions with her grandchild and children in her area.
In “Lost,” a boy named Tatsuki who recently moved in loses his way and runs into Etsuko. She offers to guide him, but then slips into memories of herself as a teacher and thinks she’s on her way to visit her student’s parents. As they walk past Tatsuki’s former school, he remembers an uncomfortable parting with a friend. In “Sheltering from the Rain,” Hina, a girl who loved Etsuko when Etsuko worked as a volunteer, takes Etsuko home because she wants help her with her homework. Hina’s older sister is surprised to see Etsuko when she comes home, but also happy when Etsuko remembers her name. In “Protective Charm,” a boy named Kohei finds Etsuko’s charm and takes it to her, and Kohei sees the ghost of Etsuko’s husband. In “Yellow Mountain,” Etsuko helps a boy named Yuto remember his interactions with a man he’d met two years earlier in the park. The story “Etsuko” depicts her going back and forth between past and present and celebrating her birthday with her family. In “Memory,” Etsuko walks in the park with her granddaughter Mana, causing Mana to think about what memories are. In each story, memory is a keyword. The way in which the children’s encounters with Etsuko touch their hearts and help them to confront their problems is thought provoking and helps reveal how Etsuko has lived her life. (Doi)
