『ラッタくんと かみやまくん』
原田楽太（らくた）という名前から「ラッタ」と呼ばれている主人公は、４年生になって、家の近くの団地に住むかみやまくんと同じクラスになる。そのかみやまくんや、身近な人びととの日常を、ラッタくんの視点からつづったエッセイマンガ。1ページ６コマを基本とする見開き１話で、４月から７月までの日々が、ユーモラスに描かれている。
かみやまくんは、校長先生に話しかけたり、授業中に寝てしまったり、いつもマイペース。そんな様子にラッタくんは驚きつつも、「フジサボテン」「うめぼしバネお」といったオリジナルモンスターの絵を次々と描いたり、体育の苦手なラッタくんに「チーターばしり」を教えてくれたりする、その豊かな想像力やユニークな言葉づかいにひきつけられていく。ラッタくんもまた、ひろった棒を気に入って隠しておいたり、粘土でドラゴンを作ったり、秘密基地を見つけたり、自分だけのこだわりを持っている。まわりの先生や親たちが、そんな子どもたちの行動を、ありのままに受け止めているのも心強い。ラッタくんとかみやまくんのとぼけた日常に笑わされているうちに、じつは誰もが、ちょっと変わったところやこだわり、はずかしさや苦手なものを持っていて、それらを認め合いながら暮らしているのだと思えてくる。作者は、素朴な絵が人気で、児童書の挿し絵も多く手がけている。（奥山）

Ratta and Kamiyama
In fourth grade, Rakuta Harada (Ratta for short) becomes classmates with Kamiyama, who lives in an apartment complex near Ratta’s house. This manga depicts essay-like episodes in the daily lives of Kamiyama and other people that Ratta knows. Each episode covers a double-paged spread with six frames per page and is presented from Ratta’s point of view, providing amusing glimpses into his life from April to July.
Kamiyama always does things his own way. He talks familiarly to the principal and falls asleep in class. While this behavior often surprises Ratta, he is drawn to Kamiyama’s creativity and unique use of words. Kamiyama makes up original monsters like Fuji Cactus, a fusion of Mount Fuji and a cactus, and Pickled Plum Spring, and also helps Ratta overcome his aversion to gym class by teaching him to imagine running like a cheetah.
Ratta has his own idiosyncrasies. He finds a stick that he likes and hides it, makes dragons out of clay, and sets up a secret hideaway. The way teachers and parents accept the children as they are is reassuring. The humorous portrayal of the boys’ daily lives makes readers laugh while at the same time leading to the realization that we are all a little different, we all feel embarrassed or lack confidence sometimes, and we live together by accepting these things about each other. The author is well known for his simple artistic style, and his illustrations are used in many children’s books. (Okuyama)
