不思議で怪しく、少し怖い8 つの物語を収録した短編集。
「ピアノ」の舞台は放課後の小学校。使われていない音楽室からピアノの音が聞こえてくる。野中先生が行ってみると、古いピアノの横に１頭のゾウが。ゾウにうながされ、驚きながらも鍵盤に指をのせると、指が勝手に動きだし、不思議な曲を奏でる。同僚の先生から、古いピアノの鍵盤は象牙製で、ゾウの幽霊がついているという話を聞いた野中先生は、そういえば、あのゾウには牙がなかったと気づく。
「猫谷」の主人公、矢島さんはカーナビの表示に従い「猫谷温泉」に向かう。しかし山は深く、道は細くなり、季節はずれの雪まで降りだす。ようやくたどり着いた猫谷温泉の民宿に入ると、主人がコーヒーとホットケーキをふるまいながら、猫谷の地名の由来を語り始める。干ばつで食べものに困った住人が、入ることを禁止されていた山で、取ったそばからまた実がなる「猫梨」という不思議な木の実を手に入れ、飢えをしのいだ。しかし猫梨には毒があり、食べた人は満月の光を浴びるとネコになったという。胸騒ぎを覚えた矢島さんがあわてて外に出ると、猫谷温泉も雪も跡形もなく消えていた。しかし、手には「ホットケーキ（猫梨ジャムぞえ）」と書かれたレシートが残っていたのだった。
どの話も、知らぬ間に不思議な世界に足を踏み入れてしまったような、ひやりとする怖さがあり、引き込まれる。怪しげな挿し絵も物語を盛り上げる。（笹岡）

A collection of eight strange and slightly scary short stories.
“Piano” takes place in an elementary school after school hours. Ms. Nonaka, a teacher, hears the piano being played in the school’s unused music room. When she looks inside, she sees an elephant standing beside the old piano. It nudges her to sit down on the piano stool. When she touches the keys, her fingers begin moving of their own accord, playing a piece she doesn’t know. She remembers another teacher telling her the keys are made of ivory, and Ms. Nonaka suddenly realizes the elephant is missing its tusks.
In “Cat Valley,” Mr. Yajima uses his car navigation system to get to Cat Valley Hot Spring. The narrow road, however, runs deep into the mountains, and snow falls unseasonably. When he reaches the hot spring inn, the owner serves him coffee and pancakes and tells him how the valley got its name. During a drought, he says, the starving villagers ventured into a forbidden part of the forest. There they found a strange fruit known as cat pears. Although this saved them from famine, those who ate the fruit turned into cats in the light of the full moon. Feeling suddenly uneasy, Mr. Yajima rushes outside. The hot spring, the inn and the snow vanish, leaving only a receipt in his hand for “pancakes with cat pear jam.”
Each short story draws the reader into a strange unknown world and sends chills up the spine. The eerie illustrations augment the thrilling content. (Sasaoka)
