『やまだめいたちの えにっき』
やまだめいが、宿題の絵日記に書くことがないので、誰かかわりに書いてくれないかなあと寝転んでいるうちに眠ってしまう。目をさますと、ノートに書いた覚えのない絵日記が書かれている。絵も字も自分が書いたのと同じだが、めいが昨日、食べたお菓子をこぼしたことや、それをアリが食べにきたこと、たまには外に行きおひさまの匂いを体につけたいなどと書いてある。誰が書いたのか、めいは不思議に思うが、内容からそれが座布団だと気がつく。次のページには、筆箱の中で寝転んでいたら消しゴムくんが外へ行ってしまったので、よけい暇だとか、時々お菓子を食べためいの手でべとべとになるなどと書いてあるので、書いたのは鉛筆かなとめいは思う。次は消しゴム、その次はぬいぐるみ、その次は鏡、窓と、めいの部屋のものたちが次々とめいの日常を絵日記に書いていたのだ。最後は葉っぱが１枚だけはさまれていて文字は何もない。これは風が書いたのかと、めいは思う。いったい誰が書いたのか、まるでなぞなぞを楽しむみたいに読んでいくと、書くことが何もないと思っていた一日に、こんなにいろいろなことがあったのだと気がつく。そこでめいが大きな紙に、昨日の朝から夜までのことを順に書き出してみたら楽しい双すご六ろくのようになった。視点を変えることによって、何もないと思っていた日常が豊かに浮かび上がってくることから、読者は日記を書くときのヒントがもらえ、日々が豊かに見えてくるに違いない。（野上）

Mei Yamada’s Picture Diary
Mei Yamada doesn’t know what to write in the picture diary assigned for homework. While lying in bed thinking how lovely it would be if someone else could do the picture diary, Mei falls asleep.
Mei wakes up to find entries in the diary that are a complete surprise—although the pictures and writing both look just like Mei’s. Something describes how the sweets Mei had been eating yesterday had spilt and the ants had come to eat them, and how it wishes it could go outside to bask in the sunlight. Mei wonders who could have written this, but from the content realizes it must have been the cushion.
Something had been lying in the pencil case with more time to itself after the eraser had gone outside, and sometimes gets sticky when Mei holds it after eating sweets, so Mei deduces this was the pencil.
Everything in Mei’s bedroom has written about Mei’s daily life in the picture diary, ending with a single leaf, which Mei thinks must have been the wind’s entry.
Reading the diary is like enjoying a riddle as Mei works out who wrote it. Mei had thought there would be nothing to write about, but actually so many things had happened during the day. Mei records all of it on a large piece of paper, so it looks like the board game Sugoroku (similar to snakes and ladders). Just with a change in perspective, Mei’s daily life now seems richly full.
