Cumulonimbus clouds form in the summer sky, it grows dark, and it looks as though it will rain at any moment, then suddenly a bolt of lighting crosses the sky quickly followed by a roar of thunder. This picture book is based on the winning photos of the “Lightning Photo Contest,” which has been held annually since 2003 by the only company in Japan that develops, manufactures, and sells lightning protection products, with photos of the likes you’ve never seen before. The bright flashes of light against the dark sky and the loud rumbles of thunder are scary, but the power and beauty of the shapes of the various types of lightning in these photos are overwhelmingly beautiful. At the end of the book there are comprehensive explanations on how lighting is formed and the various types, and how to protect yourself from it. (Nogami)
