Loss is the theme of this book. Jack, the twelve-year-old narrator, and her younger brother Birdie are thrust into
a changed life after the death of their mother. While it was never a problem for Birdie earlier that she lives genderneutral, it now causes turbulence in the new environment with other adults, in particular for their conservative Uncle Patrick. Jack therefore must do a lot of balancing and mediating work. The sensitive firstperson narrator has many questions to understand things that connect the family’s past and present. That no one is judged in the process – not Birdie, not the uncle, not the dead mother – creates a successful narrative and constructive achievement. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone has to deal with the loss of a loved one. All have experienced disappointment. But because they try to support and understand each other, all are allowed to remain as they are. Birgitt Kollmann has translated the haunting and deft narrative tone into German in an easyflowing and sensitive manner.
