中国北部にある⼤興安嶺の広⼤な森の中で、トナカイの飼育と狩猟を⽣業とするエヴェンキ族の⽣活を描いた作品。ある⽇の狩りで、⽼猟師グリシュクは誤って授乳期の⺟ヘラジカを撃ち殺してしまう。幼い⼦どものヘラジカはグリシュクから離れず、キャンプまでついてきた。彼はそのヘラジカを犴（かん）ちゃんと名 づける。⽇に⽇に成⻑していく犴ちゃんと、だんだん年⽼いていくグリシュク。最後はグリシュクが犴ちゃんを森へ帰そうとする、感動の物語。中国の著名な⾃然⽂学作家とイラストレーターが4年を費やして完成させた⼤作で、素朴な物語とエヴェンキ族の⼤⾃然に対する真摯な愛情を、読者に伝えようとしている。
