『山林の叙事詩』
子どもの私と小さな動物たちと山林を駆け回り、跳ね回り、観察し、思いを巡らせた。森の風景は私たちの目に次第にくっきりと浮かび上がってきた。道中、私は山に生えるあらゆる種類の植物の名前を呼んでみたり、足元で鳴く虫たちと共に夏に別れを告げたり、頭上を飛ぶ鳥たち一羽一羽に声をかけたりした。……山林は朽ちることなく、あらゆる生命が息づいている。作者の薛涛（シュエ・タオ）は、自然が紡ぐ独特の贈り物である山林の力を借りて、読者の子どもたちを東北地方の森の旅へと誘う。子どもたちにはこの旅を通して、自然の雄大な豊かさと果てしない広がりを体感し、そのおおらかさ理解し、小動物のような無邪気な明るさと、山林のような広い心を育んでほしいと考えているのだ。
